I have a 95 XJ 4.0L auto with only 80K on the exhaust, but its about had it. The Cat is starting to rattle and the muffler is starting to show signs of leakage in the front. And it all looks pretty rusty from the cat back. So here's my question--Whats a good sounding decent quality exhaust for the 4.0L? I was thinking about maybe Flowmaster, but I had a Flowmaster on one of my other vehicles and it was a little too loud. Maybe I had the wrong muffler on it? I dont even know which series I had. Anyway, I'm not used to inline engines and I dont want to put something on it that will sound bad or is super loud. So any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah the junction at the front of my muffler (Where it meets the Cat) Just rusted and fell off while wheeling in the woods. I took mine off and its a lot less loud than most things Ive run with straight pipes. Im probably gonna replace it with a cherry bomb glasspack since moneys tight right now. Thats prolly too loud for you but try Dynomax. They make a kit for the XJ for 90 bucks thats fairly quiet. The only thing Ive heard about the Dynomax muffler was that it was crap. But that was an opinion, nothing else. It will probably do you for a while but if you hae the funds I'd reccomend the borla kit, slightly more expensive, but the worksmanship is clearly evident in it's construction.

I put on the rusty's flowmaster cat back in May. and i'm ready to take it off and put the stock exhaust back on. I did gain some hp but it is way too loud. I do like to listen to my stereo.:banghead:

I put a PFP BBChevvy cat and a Walker $20 local special under my wife's 89, and it's pretty close to stock sound with a little more flow. Passes smog, too.

If you're working on the cheap, Walker is at most locals and is pretty good for the money. Pick a one-stage (or two-stage, even) cat with the right inlet/outlet pipe sizes, and have a shop weld the flange on for you (you'll want it if you ever do any transmission work, believe me!)

If you have the coin to blow, I definitely recommend Borla - but we are not all born rich, and I'm glad my wife didn't marry me for my money (or my boyis good looks - I have neither.)

What about the Catalytic converter? Who makes a decent quality one that will last. I'm pretty concerned about the Cat as well since i have to get tested every year. Also, I know there are a lot of cheap ones like whoever Midas uses. There converters are complete crap, i went through three in two years and I don't want to deal with that again.

"Defender" stock replacement muffler at Auto Zone is $17.99. If that's too rich for you, they also have a generic turbo muffler for the XJ at $16.99. The turbo has no warranty, the Defender is limited lifetime. Guess which one I'll buy, since I intend to hang onto my XJs for a long time.

FWIW, the Cherry Bomb at Auto Zone sells for $24.99, so I can get a stock replacement with a lifetime warranty for less than a glasspack.

The rattling in/on your cat is probably the heat shield. It is a thin metal covering that often breaks loose and can rattle a little. If that is all, just have someone spot weld it and it will be fine. Generally Cats last a pretty long time unless it is hit directly or you get antifreeze in you combustion chamber.

I have the Rusty's--Flowmaster Cat back kit on my 1995 XJ. It is a little loud but I like it that way. With the windows up its not that bad but you should check it out before getting one just in case.
