A co-worker bought a '94 4.0 5-spd 4wd 2dr from his brother-in-law/our boss.
This has great potential as a corporate and family disaster.
No major problems with the XJ yet, but with high milage it shouldn't be too long....

Anywho, I'm not familiar with this XJ model (mine is an '85 with 2.8 boat anchor).
1. What is the operating system?
2. How does one retrieve codes?
3. Is there a printed listing of the codes, and their possible causes/ramifications?
4. Other than FSM, which is the better workshop manual for this model (my Chilton's and Haynes get me by, but they only go to '91). It's a DD for him, he's not into wheeling.

TIA.

What's high mileage? Surely you don't mean anything under 200K? ;)

Anyway:

1. If you mean the OBD type, probably OBD 1

2. To retrieve codes, put the key in the ignition and turn to OFF (1 stop forward). Then, do "ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON" and leave it in the "on" position. There's no need to blast through this at warp speed - take your time, but get through the whole sequence in under (I think) 5 sec. After a couple of seconds, the check engine light will start blinking. Codes are 2-digit numbers, so each closely spaced set of 2 flash groups should be one code.

3. Head on over to ALLPAR.com and do a little searching, and you'll turn up the codes list. Each code should have a short blurb explaining what it is.

4. Can't help here - I have a Haynes (covers 84-96, mine's a '92) and an FSM, and I haven't looked in the Haynes since the FSM arrived in the mail.

Hope this gets you started.
