View Full Version : Rock Crawling event in Reno

March 4th, 2003, 16:15
Hey,
Just wondering how many of you are going to the Goodyear/Skyjacker Event in Reno on April 10,11, and 12th. I need to confirm were its at, moon rocks? Maybe if enough xj's show up we could do a trail or two that weekend, there are some good runs out that way or the fishing/wheeling at Pyramid lake could be fun.

Found a map at the site below. I'm not sure exactly what's there. I'm new to the Reno area. I'd be up for a trail ride then. I've just been bumpin' around on the Mt. Rose massif since I've gotten here, and would love to hook up with some local XJs.

Well not an overwhelming response, is reno off limits or something. GreenGhost thanks for the map link. The event is at the moon rocks, great spot for an event I went last year. I'm still going to go and do a trail that weekend. Let me know if you are still interested

A bunch of us are going to Johnson Valley that weekend, which is why you're not getting a response.

Plenty of good wheeling right around Reno, then there is Prison Hill down by Carson City. Over in Virginia City area, there is Bronco Canyon and all kinds of fun washes.

Fenris,
I'm planning on hitting the event on Sat, and depending on conditions (interest in the happenings there, weather, time) I'll do a ride that afternoon or Sun.
I've had some folks tell me about a run called Steven's Loop which is up north of town (I'll find out exactly where). It's a fairly easy trail with a few tricky spots, and some great views (of Pyramid) from the top.
If you (or anyone else) are still intending on going send me an email: tyshalley@hotmail.com, and we'll link up.

Sounds good to me, I've just a couple things to put back on the xj and I'll be ready. I'll definately be at the moon rocks on saturday for the comp and would be up for a trail. See if you can find out about that trail you have mentioned. I would be interested in a trip out there. I might know the trail but not by that name. Now we need to find one more '97 xj to go and we won't need to carry spare parts.

I think the muffler bearings and flux capacitor are different on the '98 model. I'll check on JU to make sure. You might have to bring your own parts.

I'll be at the Reno event on Saturday morning. I know of an interesting trail very close to there. We call it "Pig Rock" and I'm not sure it might be the same as Stevens loop, I'm not sure. I'd love to meet up with you guys on that day for a trail ride. Problem is I work that afternoon at 3PM (unless I can get the day off) so I couldn't go for long.

If not that day, we definitely need to hook up (GreenGhost) there are a ton of good trails around here - Peavine, Hunter Lake, are two of my favorites and I'm always looking for more.

We are probably thinking of the same trail. The way it was described to me it's in the Virginia Mountains north of the Pyramid road just before you get to the reservation. The guy who described it too me has a bunch of photos on his website of a trip he took up there, but no description. The link bellow is for his site.
I can see Peavine Mountain from my "office" at work, so I've been daydreaming of heading up there. I've been up the Hunter Lake road as far as possible with the snow a couple of times. There's plenty of places to play up there.
We can do a shorty on Sat, so you can get back, that's no problem for me. I'm not sure how long I'll stay at the event. It should be fun to watch, but I'll probably want to get out and do a bit myself after not too long.
Cool beans. Hope to see you guys this weekend. We'll have to work out a meet-up time/place. You can email me direct: tyshalley@hotmail.com , or just post an idea here.

Heres a pic I have of the "pig rock" and my jeep (still same + a few mods) so maybe you can spot me at the event. This trail is easy at first, then gets a little more interesting the further up the "canyon" in the pic you go. Unfortunately last year there was a huge boulder right in the middle of the trail and was definitely too big for me to pass alone. I don't know what it is like now. There are an abundance of trails in this area so finding one shouldn't be a problem...

We call pig rock hog head canyon and yeah its got a couple of tricky spots. I have not been out there this year so I am not sure of the trail condition. It wouldn't take long to get there from the moon rocks. I went to the moon rocks on saturday (5th) and played for a bit then drove a trail futher out towards pyramid lake. Hope to see you guys at the moon rocks. Let me know if you guys want to meet in town or just meet at the moon rocks (maybe just park at that south end of the main staging area/parking lot and meet up).

I vote for meeting in town vs trying to find you guys at the event but whatever you decide is ok with me.

This is really going to be cool!

Meeting in town probably would be best. You guys most likely know Reno better than I, so any suggestions? What time were you thinking of heading out there. I didn't see on the website when things were supposed to get going.
That rock is sweet! This should be a gas.

According to the schedule the event opens at 8:00am with the anthem at 9:00am. What if we met at that Raleys/McDonalds parkinglot on the corner of Pyramid and McCarran in Sparks? Then we could just head up Pyramid highway to the event. Maybe we could meet at 8:00 am? Is that too early?

Fenris, you in?

I'm in, I'll be there (Raley's) at 8:oo am on saturday. I went to the tech. check at Summit today. It looked like a jeep liberty convention, if you call rock buggies on 40's libertys. See you guys on saturday.

I couldn't make the event at Summit due to work. Liberty convention huh? LOL ;) I'm also going tomorrow, uh... today, (I gotta get some sleep!)

See you guys on Saturday!
