I have a 94 XJ, 5 speed AX-15, 231 command trac. I bent the output shaft and I'm not having much luck finding a case that will work.....Whats the deal with the input splines? (from gearbox to case) mine is 23 spline, are the autos 21?
Will a case from the old school split gearbox work? I tried one but it was 21 spline input but it may have been from a four banger.....or is that the differance between a 21 and 23 spline.....4 or 6 cly.......I'm crackin up, poor rig hasn't seen dirt in 3 weeks.....
Thanks,
Rob

www.advanceadapters.com has some charts that might be helpful. I find them a bit confusing, but the answer may be in there somwhere. The only think I know for sure, is a Jeep is a Jeep, unless itīs a Renault, a Chrysler, a Mitsubishi or soon to be Mercedes.:D

The early AW-4's and the 4 popper's were 21 spline. Around 91 or so they went to 23 spline. BAsically you need a newer 231 that was behind a AW-4 or a AX-15.

So will the older 6's 23 spline?

A 231 behind the straight 6 should work fine. I'm not sure which year the change was but I suspect it coincided with the HO. I would look at 91 or newer 231. You can use wrangler T/cases too but there are some differences. I know the front yoke is different and the shift mount is different. HTH!

The T-case from any year 87 and newer will fit. If it is a 21 spline all you need to do is open the case up and put your 23 spline input shaft in. I have an 87 and had to do the swap from 23 to 21 splines. It's very simple, just pull it appart, throw the input shaft in, and slap it all back together. I pulled my old case, changed the input shafts, and installed the new case in a little over half a day.

ok...so that case won't work....I was talking to someone AutoParts (scrapyard) and they told me that only a 231 out of a 94/95 will work for my 94 5 speed......are they nuts or am I screwed?

Alright, can anyone give me any reason why a manual box and 231 case out of a 90-91 XJ won't work in mine?
Accross Canada cases are $700-$1000....safe to say I'm not hauling the money out of my back pocket for one tommrow, but I can get a manual tranny and 231 case out of a 90-91 XJ for $250-$300
