Good point. But I assumed I'd have it reconditioned, planed etc. just can't determine if I'm even interested. If it's just another crackable 0331 I'm not. If it's something else, I might

I would pass. As far as I know all the good ones say TUPY. That may be an early 02 that didn't get a TUPY. Plus as trippled said it looks rough anyway. Get a reman TUPY on eBay for $500 or get a Clearwater head.

Any TUPY head will be clearly stamped. I own an '00 myself. Opportunity to grab a TUPY head off an '04 WJ presented itself. Guy was selling a whole bad motor local to me for $50 on Craigslist. I offered $50 for just the head. Now whether it is a good or rebuildable head remains to be seen. Could be a $50 door stop. My logic was that even though I do not appear to have any problems with my 0331 head, and I know it is one from when I put on a new valve cover gasket, take advantage of the opportunity. When we removed the head one of the tops of the pistons was cracked. Might have gotten lucky with the head. I would take a picture but it is soaked in PB Blaster and wrapped tight in plastic. Plenty of pictures online to see what the stamp looks like.

Some of the times heads that come off broken engines are still usable, and in some cases the damage cannot be machined out by a head shop. Those are a gamble. I think the problem OP is faced with is 02's were not universally good heads but by 2003-2004 they were all good ones & stamped TUPY. It's one of those deals like the composite or cast rotors, the switch happened mid year in 1999. Early ones have composite and late ones have cast.
