Identify this U-joint

long story short... i bought a pair of axle shafts that came with a bin full of parts. before tossing the bin in the trash, i decided to go through it and found a set of "super joints."

bronze bushings in the caps are blown out, but all the caps and both trunions are here. they are labeled CTM and the caps look the part but the machining on the trunion doesnt look anything like the images online.

trying to figure out what they are. anyone?

Kinda looks like the Nitro Gear Excalibur joint, except that it should be black and have 2 holes instead of 1. Maybe an early revision?

riddle solved...

they are older longfields, circa 2005.

trail gear now has longfield, and the design has changed. the current caps available for rebuild will not work with these joints. looks like i got some cool 300M paper weights.

hmm. I looked at longfields, I didn't go back far enough I guess.

How close are they to CTM's? I seem to recall CTM suing longfield for making an exact replica.

i would have to get dimensions from the manufacturer.

your implying caps may be interchangeable and that lawsuit may be why the current longfield design is now different?

I'm saying its possible, and that I'm willing to measure a cap to get an idea.

I wish we had this conversation a week ago. Last weekend we rebuilt one of my CTM's and I could have measured the trunion. I do still have caps that I can measure.

i would be curious to see if either the CTM or nitro caps would work... but in all honesty im not sure if its worth the money, the mating surface on these isnt in the greatest shape.

trail gear offered to take them and give a discounted price on longs. which put their pricing right on par with nitros. my current nitros have been great. i think ill just hold onto the 300M paper weights for now.

revisiting this...

i recently went to wind rock and broke a chromo stub shaft.

well, had to replace said stub shaft, and while i had the caps off my nitro joints i decided to take some measurements.

nitro cap:

longfield cap:

looks freakin close enough to me:

my front 44 is narrowed to TJ inner width and is stuffed with nitro shafts and joints. i picked up a set of stock TJ shafts to steal the inners, and had to take a box of parts as well. in the box was a folgers can labeled "super joints" with the trunions and caps. it took some work to identify them, but i believe they are older longfield super joints.

i called trail gear, who now sells owns the brand i think, and they said their replacement caps do not fit the older style joints. they offered to take the joints from me, and replace them completely. but that was at the cost of new nitros. i figured i would keep the 300M paper weights for the time being.

fast forward to now... i recently broke a chromo stub shaft, and took the opportunity to compare the old longfield caps to my current nitros... i did this because the trunions are VERY similar. and a couple users and i had speculated that you may be able to use replacement caps from another company to rebuild the old longfields.
