231 with a SYE or a 242?

I have recently purchased a package deal including a Ford 8.8 rear and a 231 transfer case with a SYE and rear drive shaft out of a 1990 XJ. My rig is a 95 XJ with a 242. My question is what needs to be done for the 231 to work in mine? or should I focus on rebuilding the 242 and putting a SYE on it? I am on a budget right now, so keep that in mind
 
The transfer case input spline count changed after 1990. IIRC 1990 has a 21 spline input, 1991 has a 23 spline input. Sell the 231 for whatever you can get and apply that cash to your existing equipment.
