231 with a SYE or a 242?

I have recently purchased a package deal including a Ford 8.8 rear and a 231 transfer case with a SYE and rear drive shaft out of a 1990 XJ. My rig is a 95 XJ with a 242. My question is what needs to be done for the 231 to work in mine? or should I focus on rebuilding the 242 and putting a SYE on it? I am on a budget right now, so keep that in mind

242 case is stronger, and the additional FT mode provides additional options on and off road

231 has more aftermarket options

you can get a hack-n-tap for a 242, if price is a concern

The transfer case input spline count changed after 1990. IIRC 1990 has a 21 spline input, 1991 has a 23 spline input. Sell the 231 for whatever you can get and apply that cash to your existing equipment.
