Pattern Check

I need a little input on this pattern please. Dana 60 rear. Vehicle will be almost completely trail only. I'll probably do 15 mile drives to work for break in and maybe 20 mile drives to the lake once or twice in the summer. Other than that, trail only.

Pinion bearing preload is about 15 in-lbs with a new inner pinion bearing and a used outer pinion bearing for setup.

Backlash is 0.004". Am I right thinking 5 or 6 thou would be ideal for my application? Is 4 too tight?

I thought it looked a little deep, so I took .006" out of the inner pinion shims. Reset preload to 15 in-lbs and backlash to .005-.006.

Now looks a little shallow to me. Going try adding .003 back to the inner pinion shims.

With the extra .003" added to the inner pinion shim. Preload 15-20 in-lbs, backlash .006"-.007". Anyone recommend setting backlash a hair tighter? I'm thinking the pattern looks good.

I don't know the 60 but if you can tighten up the pinion preload a bit without changing depth, I would. Anything over 15 in/lb seems to make lots of noise on my 30 and 8.25.

Thanks for checking me. I went ahead with final assembly. Pattern didn't change, backlash didn't change. Preload is at the upper limit of spec, but I'm okay with that.
