what is this seal

I dropped the oil pan last night but there was a seal on the back where the transmission and motor meet. It looks like a dust cover to me but want to make sure. It made it very difficult to get the last 2 bolts out of the pan. Durring the removal of the bolts the seal tore a little. Do I need to replace that or is it fine to run without it?

You don't have to have it but it's a good idea. Keeps dirt out of the rear main seal area

Replace it. I got one from the dealer.

Went back in with internal wrenching hex screws instead of the hex head screws.

Edit: Just checked it out. Part number 53010511AA.
