Ok I posted before I knew what the number for the code was.

I have a P1491 Code on my 97 but I don't see any sign of anything wrong. I swapped the relay, fan comes on as it should. What could be my issue? I need to get emissions done so I can get my tag sticker.

Well I bit the bullet and ordered a new fan despite the fact that this junkyard replacement seems to be working fine. An ASE certified tech friend of mine said the while the fan may be working it could very well be going bad and the system may be able to see that. That was his professional guess without ticketing with it.

you better try a different scanner. P1491 is not a valid code for a 97 XJ.

It is a valid code for a 98.. So, possible my repair info is incorrect.

The only thing that it monitors is the relay control circuit. so a bad fan will not set the code.

You already replaced the relay, so all you are left with is the wiring between the PDC and the PCM. (I've seen corrosion on the terminals in the PDC)

Or, you have a faulty PCM
