I searched but can't seem to find anything on this. I wanted a 97+ xj but they are hard to come by in my area. It looks like I will be picking up a 94 in a couple of days. I know you can swap the grille off the 97+ onto the older xj but I was wondering if you can swap the tail lights as well. Anybody know if it can be done?

No, the older style tail lights only fit with the older style tail gate. You cannot swap the new style 97+ tailgate either.

The older body style gives you more real estate to play around with custom LED tail lights:
