88 motor swap for 96-99

Any 1990-2001 XJ Cherokee or 1993-98 ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0 L engine block will interchange.

Remove and re-use ( or replace with new ) as needed or required from your original engine: Intake/Exhaust manifolds, flex plate/flywheel, cylinder head, water pump, distributor-less ignition or distributor assembly, OBD engine sensors, fan belt driven accessories, and/or mounting brackets.

Direct swap, as in convert the 1989 to 1996+ OBD-II controls ? No you cannot.

I thought you could if you changed out the entire wiring harness and ECU. Probably instrument cluster too. Major PITA. Going stock to stock is probably not worth it since you can probably buy a newer used XJ for about the same cost but if you have time and effort into a build on a clean 89, it may be worth the effort.

If you changed absolutely everything, including the complete dashboard assembly, it might work. That much work certainly isn't a direct swap.

The work and headaches involved would far exceed the value of the finished swap.

How bad is the reverse, putting a 88 motor trans and transfer into a 96?

Manual transmission, or AW-4 automatic ?
