This plug has racked my brain for a couple of years now, I was wondering if anyone knows what it is?

It is found at the front left hand side under the air cleaner box

For what it's worth I have the same plug on my 1988 Pioneer, also not hooked up to anything. I figure it must be an oem connector for some factory option our jeeps don't have.

I always thought there was a diode in there to isolate the cooling fan from the rest of the system. Don't know where I got that idea, though.....:gee:

Looks like the Data Link Connector.

Yep.. cooling fan diode. So the switch in the radiator does not back-feed the A/C circuitry, and vice-versa.
