I hope to schedule a site visit Wednesday afternoon for my Corona project.

Very nice turn out for a change. Carol, Souske, Sequoia, Peter, Stephan, myself, and my girlfriend. That might be a record.

Thanks for coming out John, Kim, Peter, Sean, Carol, and Stephan! It was nice to be able to give out the loudest yell at roll call!

This was an informative meeting.

Recent Fire Activity
Today we learned that the lake fire was human caused. Details are still vague on that, I'd expect more in the future.

The fire is still active above the 10,000 foot level in the San Gorgonio wilderness. It is burning in areas that have not seen significant burns in over 50 years. As it is in a designated wilderness area are they are unable to take direct effort to extinguish the fire, policy is to allow wilderness fires to be self-managed, so we can expect to continue to see flare ups until winter.

When they go to re-open the San Gorgonio wilderness hiking trails they'll have their work cut out for them as they are unable to use mechanized equipment. That means no chainsaws, dozers, or tractors. There will be hundreds of hazard trees from this and each one will have to be felled with manual cross-cut saws.

The fire burned over Onyx Summit and 1N01 / Pipes Canyon Road. It burnt in a narrow finger in to Burns Canyon and destroyed a private residence, unfortunately folks that lived there. In other areas the fire was characterized as a "dirty burn" meaning that there are a lot of unburnt areas in the burn zone. This type of burn is great for recovery so, provided we don't have additional burns, we can expect these areas of the forest to bounce back quickly.

We should expect the fire closure area to expand beyond Onyx summit. We should also expect Highway 38 to be likely to close in any rain event due to mud, ash, and debris slides.

A short list of trails affected by the fire and closure:
2N61Y, 2N70Y, 1N02 - Currently closed but should be opened soon.
2N02, 3N03, 2N04 - Currently open
1N01 - Will be closed for some time. They are going to put a gate up at the 1N01A spur (the road to the repeater).

2N04 was used as a trigger point for the potential Lake Williams community evacuation. There is now a four blade wide dozer line at the start of 2N04. I have not yet put eyes on it but expect to see this.

If you're out on the east side and see a dozer line stay off of it. At this time they must remain where they are, do not try to cover them, but, as they aren't trails, you cannot drive on them.

You may have heard about the recent Mill 2 fire down near Yucipa. This was a smaller fire that was right up against areas with houses. Fire officials reacted quickly to knock this fire down and were successful but, yet again, airborne operations were halted due to drone activity. Remember that wildfire zones are a no fly zone. More information here.

Illegal / Irresponsible Trail Usage
There has been heavy illegal / off-trail OHV use all over the forest lately from all user groups (4x4s, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs). This type of activity directly leads to trail closure. Please, if you see people going off trail and you feel comfortable doing so tell them they're in the wrong. If the refuse to listen or are acting aggressive back off but take note of what they're driving, their description, and, if possible, license numbers. You can report anything in the forest to the USFS dispatch at 909.383.5654, mention that you are an Adopt-A-Trail volunteer.

Areas that have been seeing a particularly high about of off-trail use is areas around Crestline, Cleghorn, and Gold Mountain where we have folks leaving the trail and driving on areas that are known to be home to critters protected under the endangered species act.

End of Year Volunteer BBQ
The end of year volunteer BBQ will be September 26 at the Big Bear Discovery Center. The BBQ will take place at noon with the awards ceremony at 1:30 - 2:00. More information will be forthcoming.

Cal4Wheel Report
Cal4Wheel reports that you may have noticed some events and Ocotillo Wells no longer taking place there. The Center for Biological Diversity has petitioned the state to list the Short Tailed Horned Lizard to the state's Endangered Species Act. This action has lead the Ocotillo Wells SRVA to deny all special use permits for large events at this time. Individuals and small groups are still allowed to recreate in the area.

Right now the ball is in the park's court to prove the validity of the Center for Biological Diversity's claims that OHV use is threatening the creature. Cal4Wheel will continue to monitor and take action on this. Because of this action Cal4Wheel's event Operation Desert Fun has been relocated to the Blu In RV park.

Adopt-A-Trail Group-Wide Adoption
There is a new group-wide adopted trail in the mix. 2N71 / Blue Quartz Road above Big Bear is now open to all of us as an adopted trail. This is a very easy but very scenic trail with expansive views of Big Bear Lake.

Training
We spoke about training. We are going to work on getting chainsaw certification training. This will be a two-day class, in order to take this class you must be red cross CPR and Blood-born Pathogens certified. More info on the chainsaw class and the per-requisites will be forthcoming.

I also brought up the subject of wilderness first aid and wilderness first responder courses. Greg is going to look into these options as well.

Snakes
It was also mentioned that we're seeing a lot of snakes on the trails this year. Keep in mind to make noise and not blindly reach into brush or uner rocks. If somebody in your party should suffer a bite the best snake bike facility in Southern California is Loma Linda Medical Center.

El Nino / Winter Rains
With the projection of a strong El Nino potential this coming winter we will need to work hard on our trails to make sure they are ready for excess water. Expect to see us focus on this in the near future. This should be a fun project that may include some tractor work.

Miller Canyon
There is a project in the pipe to move the Miller Canyon OHV staging area to a nearby different area. They are doing this so they can make the staging area larger and include loading ramps and permanent restroom facilities. This project is still in the pending stage but has had funds allocated to it.

Next Meeting
The next meeting will be held November 18 at 7:00 PM at the Sizzler in Corona.

Thanks for coming out

I think it's 2N71, not 2N41.
