Steering noise. Possible causes?

99XJ I6 4WD 206K Auto

I am hearing a loud steering noise that sounds exactly like bad steering gear box bracket. I removed the original bracket a few years back and replaced it with the reinforcement plates.

The same noise started to appear a month ago. I dont see anything wrong with the plates.

What are the other possible causes for the noise?

Are you lifted or do you have bigger than stock tires?
Could be frame cracks....

I'm fighting the same issue right now, but I can see several cracks so I suspect when I tear into it I will find more

Not lifted, I did upgrade to the 16in rims with General Grabber AT2 tires. No cracks that I can see. I cant imagine why I would have any cracks from that because these are not large tires

I'd be looking at the track bar and tie rod ends for movement.

steering box bolt holes cracked?

I have a noise coming from the steering shaft. Very annoying creaking. Try moving the wheel with the engine off and see if you can find where it's coming from.

Could be the frame flexing. Mine did something similar until I plated the frame.
