What is this for?

I'm replacing my ball joints on my Dana 30
And the new ball joints I bought came with this gold nut.
I didn't see anything similar when I removed my ball joints. Does anyone know what it's for? Do I even need it?

Those are a pain. I got the first one out, looked at the other and said it is staying.

I replaced my ball joints twice because I thought they were bad... apparently those were just out of adjustment.
