97+ fan in older XJ?

Hello. I have a 96 XJ project crawler with 4 wires at the fan connector. Trying to wire in a 97+ Fan with 2 wires. Searched around on a few forums and Google and I find a ton of write up on electric fan upgrades for the mechanical fan but nothing on this topic. Can someone who has done this help please?

I would test the wires but the project is currently sans a battery.

Have you tried looking up any wiring diagrams? If you have more than two pins in the harness connector, it is not stock.

I thought that they were plug and play.

i did this to my 96. the 96 has 2 wires on the electric fan connector. the newer fan has a different plug. you will have to cut the connector off your fan and wire it onto the new fan. other than that it sits right in the same holes as the factory fan.
