1989 speedometer gear question

I figure I will probably have to go pull the old one out and see but figured I would ask here first since I'm sure many of you have already been through this.

1989 with a 4.0 and 5 speed, 3.07 gears.

Does anyone know how many teeth my stock speedometer gear is?

If I can get this info I can calculate and order the right one to go with my 31" tires to correct my speedometer.

Thanks in advance for any input on this.

Tagging along for the ride. I know how much my speedo is off, but wouldn't hurt to find the right gear.

Great links. The first one doesn't calculate for 3.07's but the 2nd link does.

I ordered the 27t just now. I will post what the stock count is for anyone interested.

I calculated and my current reading is ~13% low so that means my stock gear should be 30 or 31 tooth.

Not sure which transfercase you have, but my 242 has the hold down plate and it is stamped with the teeth counts.

You mean that round tag shows the tooth count for the drive and driven gear?

That's awesome.

For anyone who's curious.

1989 XJ, 4.0, ax-15, 4x4, 3.07's = 31 tooth speedometer gear stock.

I installed a 27 tooth and my speedometer is MUCH better!




Anyone need a 31 tooth, long shaft gear?

I'd do $20 shipped! lol
