CHW and I will be getting to Slickrock campground a week early on the 29th of SEP and are staying until Oct 12 - tenting. We expect some others from the East Coast will be arriving on some other days during that preliminary week
SRCG is a great place for a group like NAXJA - whether you're in tent, in one of their basic cabins, or in one of the RV hookup slots. And, I'm usually very, very down on "organized" campgrounds. The last few years I have gotten there at least the weekend before the official event (well, not last year. ran into a "problem" in OH and had to turn around :( ) and there's always some guys that are there early for some unofficial runs - a great time.
Really, I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve - is it time yet? :P

I'll be arriving Sunday the 5th and departing Saturday the 11th...Weekend traveler since it'll take me 2 day to get there, and 2 back....
I'm not as hardcore a camper as Mike is, and my weary bones prefer the comforts of a cabin with a bed and a non leaky roof; as opposed to the tent route. I'll save the trails to batter my bones on... For the price, the cabins are a screaming deal.

it's too far away to get too excited. :(
Okay, that's BS. I'm already into the thick of planning the raffle, sending out press releases, etc. that way I get the pleasure all year long. the scheming and dreaming is half the fun. Of course I get to meet the family there in June for a week's worth of warm up wheeling. (100 Plus degrees)

What's the deal? Do I have to pay to play or are the organized runs free?

This is a free event, there's more info on the event info page. We'd still like everyone to register ahead of time, because we'll be selling tickets for the Friday night dinner and that will help us to plan how much food. Keep your eye on the NAXJA home page and we'll announce when we're ready to start registration and selling t-shirts and dinner tickets. You can just show up to the event, and attend the Friday evening festivities and not eat dinner, but there will still be a liability waiver to sign and a safety inspection before you can go on one of the runs. Registration will be set up each moring and evening at slickrock campground.

Tents? campgrounds? cabins? Ok I did use a tent one year but only because it was snowing in June the night before a 2 day White Rim excursion. My prefrence is an undisclosed desert location (that I use about once a year but I can never tell I've camped there, and it's free) with my sleeping bag on top of a ground cloth and the soft sandy desert floor, far enough from town to see all of the stars directly over my head and so quiet it seems anyone nearby can hear my thoughts. I tried a new location near Poison Spider last year but there where too many noisy neighbors and potash trucks. So weather permiting... I'll have to play it by ear as far as when I get there and for how long.
BTW I just got back from a spur of the moment overnighter mountain bike trip to the Slick Rock bike trail and the weather today was perfect for cycling but seeing those small groups that where wheeling Hells Revenge today sure made me wish my XJ was there too!!! I can't wait - Christmas comes in October this year!!!

We're bringing the new and improved rolling palace. Trying to talk the folks into a couple of days in CO afterwards for some truely insane wheelin' action. They're pretty well and hooked on the wheelin' thing so I don't think it'll be too hard. They just asked me today what the dates were so we can reserve our spot.

Sean, you're going to have to build them their own rig, or could end up riding much of the time. :D Of course, then you'll need a two vehicle enclosed trailer with a mini-workshop.............

That way I can start planning to get a REAL grill out there ;-)

Great! I usually stay with some local Moab friends but since I'll be doing Trail
Boss duties this year, it's probably best that I stay at Slickrock. Now that Chewy's gonna be cooking all my meals for me, I just need someone to split a cabin with.....preferably someone with reservations already, since there's only RV and tent sites left.

I'm looking for a group to do hamburgers on Tues night, we have the group eating area at Slickrock for it. It would be similar to what we did last year. Do you want to work on that? I think we would need a group of people to work on it so no one gets overloaded. If you want to do it again, see if you can recruit some others to work on it with you.

Chewy, I'd help ya out with the burning flesh duties. My folks will probably pitch in too.
Richard, I'm working on getting them a rig of their own right now. Looks like it's going to be a 2 XJ and 1 buggy family if everything works out right :) If everything [b:18a9901e6e]really[/b:18a9901e6e] works out right, we'll have all of them there.

Now, that'll be a sight to behold!
(got to make sure I've gotten through the Divide before you make the crossing - traffic'll be backed up for miles!)
Hey Sean, why not plan on hitting NACFest again this year? Be a good test run for this latest NAXJA fleet! Plus - Death Valley still has your name on it.

I'd love to come over for your event, but just don't think it's going to be feasible this year. The $700+ I'd blow on the trip has a motor written all over it. Plus, I'll be going to welder boy school full time then. Yep, I'm getting certified so that all this junk I'm building doesn't kill me due to lack of knowledge and improper technique.

p.s. Mike, why don't you guys have a forum up and running yet? Tellico is after you guys and they've got it goin' on.

Goat ,
Sure I'll do it ..... .... I'll round up a crew to get it done. Last years was good only suffered from lack of grillage. So this year the plan will be to get a real grill and blaze up.
Now if i could only get the ARB fringe i could bring some Chicago style out there ;-)
Sean if ya want to help thats cool we can work it out and tell your moms i will get enough fire to get her burger well done ;-)
But you cant forget stuff on tables and walk away, i heard you got problems w/ that sorta thing lol

Chewy, that's great....thanks!
We have the central eating place at Slickrock available if we want to use it, or we can set up on the grass by the basket ball court in the back corner. Hopefully, we'll have too many people to set up in the middle of camp like we have the last couple of years. We'll coordinate more as we get closer, but I'll count on you to get together a team to put it on. Get plenty of help, we should have well over 100 people. We'll need to charge something rather than count on donations like we have before, but I think we can just put out a bucket and tell everyone to put in $3-$5, whatever we decide. Any idea how much you guys spent last year, and how many were served?

Beezil was in charge of the cash and Danno would know what was left in the donation hat. Danno would also have a better hand on the # of people that were chowing down.
I agree w/ a flat fee....... we can spruce up the menu since we have time to plan.
Last year we got that meal together in no time flat and it went pretty well.
Goat Ill email ya w/ more

This will be our first really long trip in the motorhome. We are really looking forward to it. We've already got reservations at Slickrock.
Also how many days are you planning to stay?
Leaving Los Angeles on the 4th. We plan on visiting friends in Las Vegas Saturday night. We'll leave Vegas early Sunday morning. BTW... anybody know how long it might take us to get to Moab from Vegas?

Vegas to Moab should be in the 4-5 hour range, depending on your driving style and how fast you can tow your junk.

Jeff, it's a little longer than that. Since I go this route every year, I'm familiar with the trip. I'd say it's 7 to 8 hours, not towing. Last year we stayed in Vegas for the night, left at 7 am, and pulled into Slickrock mid to late afternoon, with 1 hour of time change. Going home, we ran Moab Rim, packed our gear, left early afternoon, and got to the hotel in Vegas between 10 and 11 pm, gaining an hour.
I figure the whole trip to Moab is about 12 to 13 hours, and I'm 4.5 hours to Vegas.

Towing not towing, once you're out of California it's all about the same. 70 to 80 mph.
Vegas to Moab is right in the 7-8 hour range. Done it too many times. Hate the drive until the last 10 miles down 190 into Moab, then it's all ok!

We'll be driving out the 5th, 6th & 7th, staying in a motel the night of the 7th when we arrive in Moab, tent-camping the 8th, 9th & 10th, motelling again the evening of the 11th, and driving back to NJ over the 12th, 13th & 14th.
We're bringing "Baby Jeep", our '01 Limited UpCountry, pulling the 1/2 MJ trailer for all the gear. I intend to add another inch of lift, 3.73 gears, rear discs & No-Slip locker so we can comfortably run the 30" MT's with no rubbing.
I hope to bring my beast in future years, but for our inaugural cross-country trip we are taking the comfortable ride.

C'mon, the 5th is a SUNDAY! You want to sleep late on Saturday morning instead of getting another day in Moab???
We'll be starting the scheduled trailrides on Tuesday the 7th, and the first day is usually a very good intro (at all levels), especially for someone who hasn't been before. Get rolling on the 4th, and into Moab by Monday sometime!
You won't regret the extra effort - promise.
