There was a Cherokee Chief, which was a two door. The full size Wagoneer two door was called a Cherokee Chief from the mid to late 70's and up. The XJ was also called a Cherokee Chief in the two door version. The Wagoneer badged xj's where all four door trucks as best as I know. Depends on how you want to look at it.
Jeep used the nameplate Cherokee for two door, Wagoneer for four door on the old pre-XJ full sizes. They continued the Wagoneer name for the XJ-based one and re-badged the full size as Grand Wagoneer, they discontinued the two-door full sized Cherokee.
I can verify that. I owned a 79 4dr Cherokee narrow track. 360, T18, D20, D44s. Sweet ride and probably crushed now unless someone rescued it. Its what got me into XJs.
