gas smell in vac line at FPR?

My 89 has a noticeable fuel smell at the regulator side of the vacuum line, but not really any fuel smell at the intake portion of the line.

Is it normal to smell gas or is my diaphram going out?

Any fuel in the vacuum line is a sign of a leaking diaphragm. Vacuum line should only serve to regulate pressure according to intake vacuum.

I'd replace the regulator based on fuel smell. Or if you want a comparison test - crack the throttle body and smell at that point in the manifold, then smell the FPR.
I've never noticed any gas smell in the manifold of a healthy engine, myself.
