96 xj rear glass

Hatch or side glass?
A few years back someone decided to damage my hatch glass. Thankfully it was tinted so it held together.

I believe the rear side glass is the same for all XJ's 4dr for 4dr, 2dr for 2dr obviously. Hatch glass depends on 96-down, 97-up.

96 down will fit. 97 up are glued into the frames and are a real pita to remove. Unless you ram a trailer through them. Then they are rather pliant.

Fortunately, the rear glass on the pre-97 is very easy to replace. Remove the old glass from the gasket, and install the new glass in the gasket. Now get some strong cord, about 1/4 inch in diameter, (talcum powder optional) and insert the cord in the groove of the gasket, so that two free ends protrude at one corner.

This is pretty standard procedure for this kind of glass, and now what you do is place the glass on the outside, and pull the cord around from the inside, so that it pulls the inner lip of the gasket over the flange of the opening. What makes the rear hatch a cinch is that you can do this single handed with the hatch open, where usually you need a second person to hold the glass in place. Just lay the whole thing on top, and pull the cord from beneath.

Just make sure if you're putting in glass with a heater that you get it right way around!
