Oregon Trophy Challenge - 2013
Tillamook State Forest
September 22-23

After competing in last year's "Team Trophy Challenge" event, and having a total blast, I was happy to hear the event would be returning again this year. That's not to say last years event was easy by any means. In fact, it was one of the most miserable, stressful, and frustrating trips I've been on. However, it was also one of the most memorable trips.

With the event date quickly sneaking up on us, a few of us from the NWC got a team together for this years event.

Rig #1: Dustin (TORX), Scott (NW-ZJ-SCOTT)
Rig #2: Josh (jeepboy381), Nick (redjeep2.0)

After work on Friday I loaded up the Jeep with the essentials, and headed to Browns Camp which would be our base camp for the event.

Set up camp, sporting the colors.

0800, drivers meeting.

Nick and Scott hung around while team names were drawn for starting positions. Josh and I raced over to the rigs to finish airing down. Not long after, Team 6 was drawn, and we were on deck to leave. We lined up at the day use exit, and waited for Shawn to count us down... 3...2...1... we were off!

I led us out of Browns Camp as Scott familiarized himself with the directions. Learning from last year, we double checked our decisions with Josh and Nick, and began checking them off one by one. We quickly found Team Toyota on Powerline and chased them down University Firepower.

Eventually after a few trails, we were heading up Firebreak 5. After a wet few days prior, the ground was pretty saturated in a slick peanut butter mud (typical). Josh led the way up the first section, and powered his way through the rock of doom area. I gave it a few tries with no luck. Not wanting to waste time Nick and Scott pulled cable. Yes, I winched FB5.

We powered our way up the rest of the trail, and finished the first section. At the beginning of the second section we saw the Pink Flamingo... Checkpoint #1.

Our first questions was, "how many teams were in front of us?" Much to our surprise, we were told we were the first team. The challenge was simple, it involved the rock garden, but we weren't in our rigs. We worked really well as a team, and came out of it feeling pretty good.

We made great time up the last two sections of FB5 with Josh setting pace. Hit gravel, and cruised some more, double checking each direction.

We then reached Airplane Hill where some EMT's were staged at the bottom of. They told us we were the first to arrive. Nick hopped out and spotted Josh through the bottom filter, and Scott gave me some eyes as I followed with no troubles.

After completing the filter we cruised up the trail to obstacle, where to all of our surprise we saw what Checkpoint #2 involved... completing Airplane Hill. If you've never set foot on Airplane Hill in it's current form, pictures don't do it justice. Josh and I walked up to the ledge and both just stared at it. Josh said, "Dustin, we can't do this." Not in a pessimistic way, but he was right in that this would push our rigs to the absolute max.

A checkpoint was a checkpoint though, and we all were up for at least giving it a shot. Josh got in his rig, I gathered recovery gear, Nick started doing some trail maintenance, and Scott hiked it to a suitable winch tree to set an anchor.

With the recent rain creating a slick glaze on the rocks, we hooked up Josh's cable pretty quick. After some slow crawling, and winch work, we got him up to the ledge.

McGyvered winch fix, NBD.

Even after trying to get the winch line as high as possible, we still were plowing his bumper into the ledge (by a lot). This is where we realized we might have just found the limit to an XJ on 33's. With at least two teams now behind us, we called it, and backed Josh off the obstacle. The checkpoint staff scored our effort accordingly, and we took the bypass around. The important part was, we didn't break anything, earned some points, and were still in the game.

After making our way through the top filter, we took a break to unwind and grab a bite to eat. That didn't last long too long though since we were all anxious to keep going, and we were back on road/trail crossing off more directions.

Punching our score card at a flag.

We cruised over the top, down to Hogsback, and onto Archers trying to maintain a good pace, while double checking our turns.

Once we began Archers I had a feeling we would wind up at Waterfall, and sure enough after a few sections of trail, Checkpoint #3... Waterfall. We were given our task, quickly discussed our plan, and set off. Definitely could have done things better, maybe stopped to take a breath, but overall Josh and I got our rigs up it, and our team earned some more points.

After Waterfall we made our way down to the highway for a short jaunt over to the north side. Ran a new trail up the ridge side, where we found Team #11. They had gotten a bit mixed up in the morning, and skipped a few CP's. We passed them, crossed some more directions off the list, punched our score card again...

Made our way up to Truck Dent trail, which turns out is a pretty cool trail.

That's where we found Checkpoint #4. This was a mechanical challenge that tested our u-joint skills. I'll just say Josh is a magician. He took his apart, and reassembled it in less than five minutes. Scott and I however apparently need to practice field servicing a u-joint.

With CP4 behind us, we were off again. We had a pretty good pace going through the next set of turns, which might have stung us a bit. After a few miles of turns not adding up, it was apparent we missed something. So we set off to back track to the last turn. That's when Scott picked up my GPS, looked at the map a few times, glanced at the directions, and calmly said, "I know where we are."

That's when I took the lead, and let Scott call corners up to Checkpoint #5 on the windy socked in mountaintop of, Triangulation Point.

Checkpoint 5 had us all pretty much scratching our heads. After our 2 minute discussion time we kind of set off just winging it, and developed a plan as we went. We finished the challenge with almost a full score, so apparently we did something right. Lets just say it involved some creative winch line rigging.

We made our way down from the peak, and added another punch.

We then came up on Checkpoint #6. Performed the task, earned a great score, and set off in great spirits after hearing, "you guys are hauling ass!" That called for some celebration manifold burritos for the team.

Added another punch.

We continued on feeling pretty good about the day so far. After a hell of a climb up the ridge (I think I can!), we made our way down to Stick in the Nose. That's where we found Checkpoint #7, and were asked, "are you guys competitors?" They weren't expecting us for another hour or two. We hung out for a bit while they set up their checkpoint. We completed the challenge, and felt good about our score.

Nearing the ten hour mark, we continued on the course. Made our way back up the ridge to Archers V-Notch. The slick conditions made it fun.

With only one checkpoint remaining for the day run portion, we set off to finish it. We found the checkpoint set up at the top of Lyda, and Josh and Nick set off to perform the challenge. With another good score, we set off to run the last page of directions back to camp.

After completing the last turn we headed for camp to check in with Teresa, and let her know we conquered her course. It was a pretty rewarding feeling knowing we at least finished. It was even more rewarding knowing that two "cherocars" took the lead, and ran with it the entire day with two massive targets painted on us.

Teressa said she estimated in an ideal situation the first team would be back at 7:10PM. As she told us that the time on my dash was 7:09PM..

However, time doesn't matter in this event, it's about the points. With more possible points to earn on the night run portion, we headed to Gales Creek for some gas.
F809C8BB-B696-4361-AD71-CAB49E9C2B5B-9067-00000C7CCC13F8F7_zps1b192456.jpg

After getting back from gassing up, we were all exhausted. Knowing that the night run could potentially run till dawn we all tried to get a little cat nap in and rest up. Since we finished first, we were first out of the gate for the night run portion at 11:00PM. We were doing good on crossing off directions, but one missed mileage reset ended up biting us. We had to back track a little ways, during which two teams had passed us. Nevertheless, we found our mistake, and the hunt began. Scott and I could tell from Josh's pace he wanted to make up lost time.

We found Team 4WP slowly making their way through the trees on FB5. We followed them on trail to the first checkpoint of the night.

After anxiously waiting, we performed the challenge, and set off for the next leg. The directions lead us back to Airplane Hill, oh joy. Team 4WP perpendicular in the filter.

With the "Obstacle Optional" we bypassed it, and made our way out the top filter.
AA10321D-CF14-4C4E-9BD3-75BF1AB8CBD4-9067-00000C7CB212A380_zps0a700021.jpg

From there we headed over the ridge to the second checkpoint of the night. I will just say I've never ran Hoodraiser that fast, and Josh was still losing me. This gave us time at the bottom though to dial in our finish time.

We needed to be back by 0230, and I believe we turned our score card in shortly after 0215, with not much time to spare. At this point in time all we could do was hope we did well enough in points to make it into the final four for the final shootout the next morning.

Morning rolled around rather quickly. All teams gathered in the day use at 0900 to hear the results. "With a total of 800 points, and in fourth place, Team NAXJA." We were in! The other three teams were pretty competitive, and we definitely had our work cut out for us and our Cherocars. Which, I might add looked like grocery getters next to the other teams. :D

Shortly after the four teams made their way to Little Browns for the final team challenge.

After a good long wait behind the gravel pile listening to the croud cheer, engines rev, and winches sppoling, we finally were called to compete. We were called to the side, given our challenge which consisted of six tasks, and were given a small amount of time to devise a plan. We divided up the tasks, and set off to knock them out before the clock ran out. I won't go into detail of the challenge, but as a team we were able to complete them all with a few minutes to spare. It was a total blast. Points at this point didn't matter to me.

Completely drenched from the rain, we made our way back to camp to pack up, air up (we still had to drive our rigs home), and then made our way to the event site for a BBQ, raffle, and to hear the final scores.

Team NAXJA ended up taking 4th overall out of 12 registered teams. It was an amazing experience this year. I would have loved to have had a podium finish, but we finished the day course, night course, and final challenge. We conquered the Oregon Trophy Challenge in my opinion. Nicely done, Team #6.

I definitely learned a lot competing for a second year. I'm already looking forward to next years event. I'd encourage anyone interested to try and get a team together.

Are you not supposed to discuss the challenges with the public?

If your involved with setting it up, before it happens...

If you're not allowed to talk about it after it happens how are people supposed to get involved and want to participate?

Anyway, I had a blast!

Thanks team!

I had a great time in this event and our team worked great together, it took equal effort from all of us to figure out the navigation and checkpoints. Dustin your write up is awesome as usual and appreciated!

Here is my one picture, driver perspective of airplane hill.

Your answers are always so awesome. !!!1

I just asked because he didnt go into detail much on the actual check point challenges, which is fine, it would have been alot more typing. The way i read what he wrote just sounded like maybe he wasnt supposed to talk about them. i.e. (lets just say, I wont go into detail, etc)

Great writeup as usual torx, sounds like you guys had a blast!

It does look awesome! Kind of a mini top truck challenge thing, made for the more everyday wheeler than the hardcore sponsored teams.

:yelclap: Great job "TEAM 6" !!!

Wish i could have gotten a team together in time to come play. Already working on next year though.

Airplane hill is the devil ! Props for getting in there and giving it a go.

Congrats guys!
Good job to all of you.
Way to represent NAXJA and showing everyone just how capable
(and competitive) a couple little Cherocars can be when in the right hands!
WELL DONE!

you guys did awesome and being a xj guy you know you were my favorite team and were happy to see you out front. as always amazing write up and everybody is more than welcome to talk about all the challenges. it is only top secret until after it happens. were hoping for our third year out next year we will have a team competing instead of working it.
here are the pics i got

A Huge X2 to ALL of that..party1:

Great job team. Glad you guys did well. I did it last year and am on the same page as Torx. It is very exhausting and mentally challenging event. It's a tuff competition and well worth doing over and over. Wish I could of been there but I'm still out of town working. Again congrats.
