looking for info on backspacing and searched almost every category, looking to get 33s and new wheels on my xj is 4.5" of bs good?

for 12.50s i prefer 4-3.5" of BS to keep them off the control arms.

I'm running 3" backspacing 15x10 rims with 31x12.50 tires I love the wider stance and control arm clearance but with the rear tires tucked all the way up my fender carves a bit into my tire about an 1/8" from the outside of the tire. My fender is trimed all the way to the inner fender in the rear.

I would consider 3.75". Its pretty common. 4.5" you could be getting closer to interfering with OTK steering and stuff like that, or if you eve do a WJ swap.

^ this. I run 3.75 15x8's to clear OTK steering and LCAs. The wheels look better too, IMO.
