The Best Steering Box

16vvincent

NAXJA Forum User
Hey guys, I have a question. I am, soon, going to replace my steering box in my 87 XY. (puking fluid). I have done a couple of searches, but mostly I came up with comments about reman boxes.

What is the best box for the XJ?

I have seen a couple of suggestions about using a V8 WJ box, but I am not sure what the differences are.

Any thoughts.

As for the truck that the box is going on, I intend to run 33 x 12.5 x 15 tires. I have already replaced the pump (also puking), both hoses and have a P/S cooler to install at box replacement. The Frame rails have already been beefed up with a steering box brace built into the bumper mounts.

waggy/YJ box, got mine from Advanced does well with 38's and a locker

I thought about this until I started reading more and saw some people talking about an issue when turned at full lock or near full lock and the suspension flexed to either side. Never could pin down what exactly people were saying was the big issue and if there was a solution.

X2 on PSC. Mine isn't the big bore but it is tapped for assist when I decide to do so. It's a very nice box. Worth it IMO

Is that the 4 bolt box upgrade? Have a friend who went that route but the increased turning with the 4:1 turning ratio keeps breaking the clock spring in his wheel so no horn, cruise, etc. Do you have that problem?

To the OP - you can snag a box from a JY, rebuild, tap and install a ram assist for about half the cost of a PSC box... Comes down to preference and style: do you like to pay for high quality drop in replacements or do you like DIY JY mods? (Plus IMO you'll get far better performance out of a rebuild with ram assist)

PSC large bore.

any box is going to get worn out if you put large tires on it and put it in places that its hard to steer.

hydro assist will solve those problems.

never had that problem

remove your box and send it to PSC. they will rebuild it from mild to wild for you. they have one of the better ways to do the assist ports in my opinion, the change the spool valve around inside. instead of sending the fuild thru the box and then the ram, thier valve alternates and sends fuild to both at the same time. ive beaten the bag outta mine and its been great, even had to run a few days without assist and the box did great alone. hell I bent the pitman arm and the box was fine. sending PSC your old box is a lot cheaper too. mine was something like just under $300 shipped.

or do you like DIY JY mods?

I fall into this catagory. I prefer to find the best part out of a wrecking yard and bring it back to life.

I like the idea of sending my box out to PSC and having it rebuilt, but I am not too fond of the pricing. The $300, is almost what I spent to buy the truck.

Get a rebuilt box from Old Man on this forum. Best service, best product, excellent price.

Sorry but I am going to be working on a contract in Minnesota for 18 months so I won't be near my shop but a couple of days a month and won't be able to rebuild any more steering gears for a while.

Been searching but I suck at the surch. I'd like to research the jy hydro assist. Anyone have any links or suggestions?
