4 wheel drive rattle

i have a 2000 XJ mechanically stock 4x4 with the 4.0 6 cylinder and im getting a rattle that i can hear in the driver seat that sounds like its coming from just under the manual 4 wheel drive lever it is on and off and if i jiggle the lever it stops and starts... any ideas?

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A thumping, rattle, or creaking noise may be heard coming from the transmission tunnel area on acceleration, at idle, or while driving over bumpy roads.

DIAGNOSIS:
Road test the vehicle, if the noise is present and there are no worn or damaged parts relating to the transfer case shift mechanism, perform the Repair Procedure.
