The starter has a power supply glitch, after the truck has been started and running for several minutes, it will try and engage on it's own. On the opposite side of that, I've turned on the ignition and only got as far as the run position, and the starter will engage.... Any ideas?

Not sure if it's because the oil filter adaptor and valve cover gasket is leaky, covering the starter in oil, or if it's in the ignition lock cylinder.

Ignition switch for sure. May be a miss aligned switch with relation to the linkage that operates it from the lock-key mechanism, or burned and shorted wires-switchconnector-Ignition switch assy.

96 has the chryco column with the switch that is integrated with the tumbler.

OP, you'll need security torx bits to get the plastic cover off the column. Bolts are underneath.

this is a great video.
