98 cherokee alternator

ok i know there's tons of threads out there for this and have looked for about 2 hours now and can't find anyone that has tried this. i would like to run 2003 durango 160 amp and thats the new plug style i have a 98 which is the old 3 bolt wirring set up can i change the plug to the new style? also there's a 136amp available for my year according the the local part store. i do live near MCI (powermaster) and with a walk in discount i can't justified 300+$ Any help would be great

P.s i Im going to do the battery cable upgrade as soon as i figure out what i'm doing with the alternator.
 
I upgraded the alternator to the high output Cherokee unit. I had to grind the two brackets a little but otherwise it was an easy swap.
