What year were the extra electronics added to the AW4?

Found a 98 model xj on craigslist that had a fire in the engine bay. Dad has a 96 model and needs a parts vehicle. I know that my 00 model has more electronics in the AW4, but I can't remember when the extra electronics were added. If he can use the trans, we might buy it to strip what we need and then part out the rest.
