More AW4 Q's

94 XJ AW4 going into 88 MJ (previously BA 10). New to me 23 spline 1993 231J T/C.
I have the shifter, plate, cables set and ready (need a bracket from the JY.

OK, I've stabbed and bolted up the tranny (first try) and now have questions about the electrics.

1.) The BA10 had a simple reverse light switch and connector with 4 wires. The NSS on the new tranny has the 6 plug connector with 6 wires. Where does the 6 wire connector plug in...will I have to splice it in somewhere or is there a plug I'm not seeing?

2.) The main wiring connector is a 7 pin connector, does that connect to the TCU? ECM?

3.) Running down the driver side of the tranny is a small harness with a two prong male connector on it. On the new T/C is a female two prong plug. Do these go together?? Is this for the Part Time light or???

4.) I've never worked on any Jeep but a RENIX and I know the vacuum system well...so now, I will lock over the front axle. Does the T/C activate electronically or just via the linkage.

I really appreciate the help guys. I have all the hardware in place...just need some guidance.

Thanks

It sounds like you need to go back to the junkyard and get the computer and wiring. Unfortunately, the trans wiring is integrated into the main harness to some degree. You'll have to separate it all out and install the modified harness in your vehicle. Without the computer the trans operation will be very limited.

you don't want the TCU from the OBD-I jeep. You need a TCU from a renix era jeep, and the auto TPS that feeds it.

You may or may not have the auto wiring uner the dash, IIRC the TCU was a yellow box on the passenger side, above the passengers left knee behind the dash.

Might seriously consider just doing the radesigns shifter and saving yourself a boat load of hassle and having a manumatic.

Newer Tranny installed in a 89XJ
Newer tranny install in older XJ, NEED HELP

OP by rkates on 8-31-2009
Friend of mine just got an 89 xj with a bad transfercase. He ended up getting a newer style TC from local pic a part.(97 or 98) New case has different spline, his thought is change transmission from same jeep TC came from. Both tranny's are AW4 but the one in it has selectable power/comfort control.

Question is can the newer tranny be used with older TCU? Do we need to pull the TCU from the newer jeep?

Not real sure what to search for, tried different things and so far no luck.

In the pics, you can see the rotor is in a different position. The old setup has a magnet going by a magnetic switch. The new setup is more like the CPS sensor with a magnetic coil sensing when the 4 steel lobes go by. Those steel lobes won't trigger the 96 magnetic relay-type switches.

Thank you...the project goes on. I've had to stab this tranny 3 times and it's now on and torqued with the flexplate left to torque. After that I can get to the electrics.

The drive shaft needs to be shortened about 2", in the DS shop now. The front shaft is fine as it came from the donor with AW4. The interior stuff is all done, shifter, plate, cables and full console. It LOOKS like an automatic...but still on the blocks.

If I ever get it done I'll take pictures...

My problem now is the NSS...
Going from a BA/10 to an AW4 there is only a four prong flat plug on the vehicle side, just for the reverse lights. The NSS on the new tranny has the 6 prong female side.

I got the pigtail for the NSS (vehicle side) with the 6 prong female. I also got the TCU off the same XJ (91) . On the inside of the MJ (88) there is no plug-in for the TCU. In anyone's experience that has done similar swap, is it necessary to get the whole wiring loom, or can the TCU wiring be spliced in? I'm sure it all disappears into the C-101 connector...somewhere.

Anybody got a simple solution to this, my head is about to explode! :flamemad:
