my brother just got a "new" 99 XJ and its his first auto in a long time. well sometimes when he comes to a stop he said the converter tries to lock up and kill the motor, any ideas?

Chang that fluid, if he just got it. There's no telling what's going on.
And filter
If you can go to parkrose hardware and get a magnet (3 dime size ones for 10.99 ) and get one on there now to see what you can catch be for the change.

The aw4 is controlled by the tcm, that could be bad. But I would think that it would have shifting issues too.

Mine does the same thing every once and a while. I think mine is the TCM becuase mine in the 1-2 shift spot it will stay in 1st. Most people say they will stay in 2nd. Mine started after I unpluged the speed sensor and didn't plug it back in for a while. I haven't fixed it yet but I'm just assuming. I will be watching this post to see if anyone else has any idea's.
