There is a light banging sound. From where it is coming, is very difficult to tell. The irregular banging is detectable through the transmission (AX15) gear selector. This is only detectable through the selector when in gear (Drive, Reverse, etc.). It is audible only to a slight degree, and has no recognizable rhythm.

1987 XJ Wagoneer - 140K - 4.0L - AX15 - NP242 - Open cooling system "upgrade" - recent fluid changes - new "u" joints on rear drive shaft.

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

AW4.. The tranny is an AW4.. Sorry.

make sure its shot first. if the rubber is crushed and mushy and you can move the tranny side to side.. then it is toast.
