tap stock D35C fill plug hole for real plug?

is it possible? Got both my covers off, tried the plug from front, it looks like it might work in rear cover if I tapped it with a pipe tap but might also be a tiny bit too big. Don't want to try it if it's going to mess stuff up, I've been spending money like mad this week, but since I have to go to the store and get a plug anyway, I'd rather get a threaded plug w/ 3/8" recess and a magnet rather than a rubber one. (my old one was apparently leaking, as I had a nice trail of gear oil down the cover. Looks like I was losing gear oil from both the plug and the pinion seal.)
