My selec trac 86 cherokee

Why did you ask? Having a problem with 4WD? I'm confused.

Lack of axle vac motor does not mean no 4WD. Then again, it doesn't mean 4WD works either (may be transfer case issue). Do you have NP242 transfer case (with full-time 4WD)?

I was asking because the guy at the jeep shop I went to said that my front axle should have the vacuum lock on it. I just wasn't sure if that was true

The guy at the Jeep shop wasn't pulling your leg.

86's with Select-Trac had a vacuum disconnect on the pass side of the front axle. This was activated by a valve body in the transfer case.

If the disconnect did not activate, 4WD would not function as there was nothing for the differential to work against and the spider gears would just spin.

This was AMCs solution to 4WD on the fly (no lockouts).
