AW4 Shift Control

Does anyone know how to defeat the automatic upshift/downshift between 1st and 2nd gear on the AW4's. I tried to do a search for previous posts but my phone is incompatible with the forums search function.

Thanks

if you have an android smart phone down load this app tapatalk. it let you search all functions of this web site. there are some topics on this but it too extensive to type in here

Jackspeed, You need to be a tad more specific. The solution is year dependent.

On earlier models, a mod exists to bypass the 1-2 upshift and to hold it in gear. That did not create a "code" because the TCM was stand alone.

On OBDII models, the TCM talks to the PCM, and when you switch out the solenoids it creates an engine code.

Here is one solution http://articles.jeepforum.com/XJ_AW4_TCU_Shift_Mod
I simply googled "XJ 1-2 shift" and got that as the 2nd or 3rd result.

There are also vendors who sell a kit that takes over the shift function completely and allows you complete manual control or OEM automatic control.

I just talked to one guy who does this.... What was his name...

Ah, Rory @ http://radesignsproducts.com/14Shiftcontrollers.aspx

Well yes searching would work, I do make some, and maybe me http://www.radesignsproducts.com you talked too?(hi neighbor, I'm in Madison now) the other guys who does a control like this is Montana Fab, theirs is for 1-2 control only on OBDII AW4's.

I did the Montana fab controller on a '00. Works great.

Here's the install.
I have an older version which is a little harder to install then the new ones.

XJMike and Anthrax323 also documented installing later versions on the same thread on page 3 and 5.

Thanks for all of the info. My Jeep is a 90 and my friends is a 94. We are both looking for the same fix and it looks like a simple mod based on the provided links. Thanks again for the info.

RADesigns sells a great product. I use the Baja shifter. Super cool, clean and easy.

For a '90 model, wire in the switch, unless you're racing. In that case, use the Baja shifter.
While the Montana Fab unit is great, and works with any year, it's biggest feature is not setting a CEL on the OBD-II system. All the earlier XJs don't have that "feature", so it's not really worth spending the money for it.
