Axle Parts

Just picked up a Dana 44 out of an 87 and in the process I have been able to find little about the parts interchange between different models of Jeeps and this axle. For example it looks like the ZJ Dana 44 brakes should be a bolt on...but are they? Another question....What years of front HP Dana 30 gears will interchange? Does anyone have a great gear source for information?

The difference in the brakes is the outer bearing flange bolt pattern. There is no difference in XJ HP gears thru the years.

Thanks for the pointers.....mostly concerned about those nagging little changes manufacturers are so famous for making.

I have a Dana 44 with ZJ rear disk setup on it. It is a BIG PAIN to set this up correctly with ZJ brakes. The backing plate holes are not correct so you need to re-drill and also the center hole needs to be widened out. I have read that Crown vic or explorer disk brakes are better on the XJ dana 44. I found this website when I did mine and instead of making a spacer like it says, go to currie and find the one for your kit. Much cheaper and less of a headache.

Or here is another link for the Crown Vic setup that I wish I found originally.

Thanks for the links. I have a pretty sweet deal (free) on a set of disc brakes off a ZJ dana 44. Just curious do you know if these need the same mods as the ones off a ZJ 35? The spacer aside I am mostly concerned about enlarging the center hole. Either way for the price its going to be tough not to just use these. I might look for the Crown Vic, but in my area parts are tough to locate and the local wrecking yards refuse to break up axle assemblies, so even when I do locate parts they want to sell the entire assembly.

Use the Randys Ring and Pinion web site to figure out what years parts interchange. It is easy.

Thanks..haven't had a chance to check this out but I am sure it will be very useful.

I used a set off a D35. The hole needs to be widened out about 1/16th of an inch or so. The other holes need to be drilled out in order to mount it. Also there is a rivet that holds the backing plate onto the caliper mount that needs to be taken down or off. It interferes with the axle retaining plate. I am now looking for a crown vic set up. I am currently having issues with the axle seals constantly leaking.
