Alternator"proof of mud"

Hello, i´m writing from Sao Paulo - Brazil and I´m very impressed with the content with this forum. Here we don´t have any XJ specialized list, neither people that use XJ in off-road. So I would like to count with the specialist people :peace: in a problem that I have most of the time when I take my XJ and go to the Mud.

My alternator stopped again after I took a short track with water. I know that is almost impossible to have a definitely solution to solve this because we can not seal the alternator, change the place, etc, but any idea to mitigate this kind of problem (change OEM alternator to another one, make some upgrades, etc)?

All the best!

The factory rubber splash guard coupled with the factory engine skid will go a long ways to helping keep splash off of the alternator.

Jeep really screwed up with the locating a critical component like the alternator in harms way.

First of all, welcome to the boards. Good to have someone from south america on here. Do you have any pictures of your truck that you can post up? Maybe some wheeling pics?

These guys have you going in the right direction for a fix to your problem. Good luck with the fix!

Cheers, SDO

Isn't 90% of the trouble with water/mud around the alternator in the connector? In that case, like has been said before, dielectric and plenty of it. If the problem is with debris then another solution would be needed. It'd be cool (and very difficult) to completely enclose the alternator and run vent lines to and from the enclosure.

Also, http://www.neverwet.com/. It would be a lot of work but an interesting and potentially fruitful project.

ever looked at an alternator up close? see all those vent holes in the casing? those are there to vent heat... which would build up in an enclosed bag.

This problems been solved... ive gone thru mud puddles big enough to coat the entire xj in mud.... only to have a completely dry alternator.

BMW uses vents to cool their alternators. on the e36 and up they have basically a snorkel that supplies air to the alternator. a similar system could be adapted for the jeep

I didn't think my post was too long to read

But you're right, I'm sure your way is the best ever :kissyou:
