Can I put a plastic tank from a 1996 jeep in place of the metal one from my 1989? I know the fuel pump is in a difrent location but I am thinking it should work the same if I just rewire and put new fuel lines on.

Not sure that the bung for retaining the fuel pump is the same....

im not planning on changing the fuel pump. I have a complete gas tank from a 96 and I just found out today (just before welding the frame stiffiners on that side) that the metal tank is leaking.

The POLY tank and fuel pump do not have a provision for a fuel return line that is needed for the older engines with the fuel pressure regulator.

My '96 has a METAL tank, just like my '89 ('97 was the changeover year with some changes throughout '96). The metal tanks MAY interchange although IIRC one of them has an internal bracket to hold the fuel filter.

Thanks. what I have in the back yard is a plastic tank. It looks like the outlet on the fuel pump roke off anyway so unless I come up with one used I am going to have to just get the right one from the parts house.
