89 XJ, 4.0, auto trans, 178,000. All coolant was lost down the highway, due to stupid plastic cap on expansion tank, didn't notice temp gauge was pegged into the red until it was too late. Engine shut off like someone turned off the key, pulled to side of road to let it cool.

Towed home next day, filled coolant back up and checked oil, looked ok. Now engine turns over and acts like it wants to start, but doesn't. Replaced spark plugs because they looked burnt, checked for spark from coil, it's good, and there is pressure from the fuel rail. Have gone over most of the wiring, but everything seems to be in good order. CPS? Could it have jumped time? Head gasket?

CPS = no spark

Doubt it can jump time, but then I don't know it all.

Do a compression check, if you have weak compression on two consecutive cyls., water in oil, vice versa, head gasket possible. How's the oil?
