do you think any of them are quieter than others? i was kinda thinking the spartan would be quieter because it has less "teeth" im not sure. just a thought. maybe someone who had heard both ratchet around corners. thanks!

The picture of the Spartan locker doesn't show it's teeth(all the teeth are laying on the box). Here's a better pic: http://www.ringpinion.com/SpartanLocker.aspx
If you compare the 2 pics carefully, you'll notice the 4 main parts are almost identical between the 2 brands. They are functionally identical.(and about the same noise level)

Powertrax does make a modified assembly, called the no-slip, which is engineered to be quieter(it has a system to mechanically disengage the over-driven clutch, so it doesn't chatter.)

It has a few more parts, and costs about 100-150 more then the lock-rite.

A No-slip doesn't even make noise!

oh alright. thanks so much! appreciate the response!

Lock Right is the easiest to install but is one of the louder units out there. Same goes for all the Lock Right clones, Sparten, Aussie, Yukon ... Also the coupler springs have a tendancy to break often in these units and when they do, the spring can damage the couplers resulting in buying new ones.

I take it you are looking for an inexpensive way to lock your rig and still drive it everyday? There are hundreds of threads here about just that. Depending on the type of wheeling you do, axles, tire size, and gearing. You will likely be upgrading to a better locker within a year or you break an axle shaft.

If you are just going for quite and don't drive your rig on the street, weld the spider gears and call it a day. If it's daily commuter, then you could try a Power Trax by Richmond Gear, which advertises that it is the qietest and smoothest unit out there.

I had them front and rear on my rig, and was not impressed only to change the rear one out for a Detriot Locker about 2 months later. The unit would pop hard and was not that forgiving around corners. It's only up in the front now.

I would recommend the Detroit Locker. I know this means you have to swap the pumpkin but trust me you will be doing it sooner or later anyway. It drives great on the street, does not make noise, and locks up like a MOFO when you need it. It's dependable and as tough as them come.

Now if you want a selectable locker, Electronic or air, be prepared to pay dearly, and you still have the swap the pumpkin.

Good luck and may the force be with you...
