i own a 1992 XJ 5 speed 2wd. I have the 4.0L, at high RPMs it seems to break up. there is no check engine light. scanner doesnt pick anything up. almost as if the timing is way advanced. but seeing as how it is electronically controlled i dont know how this could be.

Define high rpm. Just how high are we talking? Over 5,000 for instance?

I had some of this problem on my 95 when the MAP sensor went bad. Not bad enough to set a code, just not good enough to run quite right.
But the first suspect would be plugs. The 4.0 ignition system is very strong. If you expect bad starting to warn you of bad plugs, you'll be late.
