Spools?

I love my spools. I never have to worry about a locker not working. Once I got use to driving on the street it was great.

Ok, I know I sound dumb right now but I'm going to risk it for sake of better information. Explain spools please. I've been wheeling for years but never had any experience with these, or maybe I have and just don't know it. I've used Limited Slip, detroits, aussie, ARB, but have no clue about spools. Help please....

Each wheel spins exactly the same as the other no matter what. If they don't, something is broke.

a spool replaces the differential. it completely locks but axles together.

Re: NAC-Fest 2011!

Is it something like welding your shafts only less wear on your gears? Maybe a solid shaft? Or is it something you buy completely seperate like any other locker and install?

Depends on the route you want to take.
Full Spool (replace carrier), mini spool (replace spiders) or weld up the spiders.

Re: NAC-Fest 2011!

Links? And are they hard on DD's?

They are extremely hard on tires and handling! They can be even worse on the trail or in snow/ice.

Re: NAC-Fest 2011!

you just have to learn to drive with them

Yeah right! I take it you actually have no real experience with a welded or spooled diff.

I had a mini spool in my Dana 44. It drove just fine on the street. Stable and predictable. It was absolutely fabulous on icy trails and great in the rocks. I did use up tires about twice a fast as I did before and after I had the mini spool in. I took it out when I started daily driving in DC traffic, way too hard on tires but great for a "mostly" weekends rigs.

Here are a bunch of links where I have posted about my experiences:

And my first mini spool report

Had a spool. Loved it. Always on, predictable, reliable, burns through tires.

Will never own one again for anything that doesn't live on a trailer.

Would own one in a 35 spline front axle application with hydraulic steering.

I've run a spool in my Dana 44 for about 10 years. It chirps a lot on dry roads.
I like it and have only run it in a trail rig.

For a DD I recommend a lunch box locker.
