Modern alignment machines: positive number is toe IN ...right?

I just had an embarrassing scene with my 4WD shop -- I was mostly sure that +.02 value of my toe from a fresh alignment meant toed OUT; the guy was mostly sure it meant toed IN, and since the alignment tech wasn't there to solve it, doubt festered until we both didn't believe in anything anymore.

Trying to search for an answer on this has been like asking Creationism or Evolution --- although a small majority is in favor of positive toe = IN.

I haven't touched an alignment rack in 10+ years. Where am I (and others) getting that negative = toe in? From older machines reading in inches, not degrees? Help me save face, people... :dunce:
