i have a blown up 99 jeep cherokee do i have to get the same year jepp motor or can i get any year of motor

any short block jeep 4.0 will work from what i understand.
We swapped a 94 into an 89 no issues.
If you grab a renix or non 99+ cherokee engine, you will need to use your head and swap all your brackets, manifolds, sensors etc over to your new block.

The closer you stay to the same generation, the easier it is. 96-99 engine would be pretty close to a drop-in swap for you.
You have to put your sensors into the donor engine. Other things that make a difference are ignition parts, fuel injectors and plumbing, and accessory mounting (esp power steering and tensioner). 96-99 is mechanically the same but some of the other stuff might still need to be swapped.

I think the intake for the 99+ is different, and it would be a downgrade not to swap your 99 into a pre 99 motor.
