Will the 87-90 dash gauge assy work in the 85 XJ? Any differences between them?

Gage Cluster Swapping By Year
From: http://www.baeta.org/opie/Gauge.htm

There were 4 different gauge clusters for the Cherokee in the US production years of 1984 till 2001.

The gauge clusters in the 84-86 were electronic except for the speedometer, which was run off a cable.

The 87-90 were also the electronic and run off a Speedo-cable, but the Speedo cable from the earlier year is different, so when you get your parts, make sure to get the upper cable from which ever jeep the cluster came from.

Note: You can probably swap the speedometer from your existing cluster into the new cluster; this will keep the mileage units correct as per the law. Make sure you stay within your age group.

I can't remember if the odometer assembly is separable from the speedometer. At least on my 1990, there's a tiny c-clip on the odometer shaft. Pull it out, and you can separate the individual 'digits' on the odometer and spin them freely by hand. Then just press them back together and insert the c-clip again and you're good to go.

Note: You will need to change out the warning light water temperature (back of block) & oil pressure sending units (by distributor) for gage sending unites.
