4.10's or 4.56's

im toying with building up my 96 XJ. it will have a long arm system on it.most likely 285/75/16 tire with the Rubicon rims.i caught up with what gears to run 4.10's or 4.56's. my 87 started with 4.10's and 33/12.50/15 was not enough. 4.56's are a little much on the freeway. both have automatic's. the 87 is a low output Renix. the 96 is the high output engine.

TOO much? How many rpm's @ hiway speed? I have 35's with 4:88 's nv3550 5 spd- 3000 rpm's at 75 mph-no issues actually I get 18 mpg this way.Dont be fooled by lower rpm-that does NOT mean higer mileage.

Search. Yours is seriously the 4th 5th thread asking this exact question in the past few days.

my 87 can only muster 13.5 mpg with 33's 4.56's and turning 2650 at 70mph.right now my 96 with 245/75/16 with 3.44's can get close to 17.0. but thats with crappy calif gas

I have 4.10s with 33s on my 01-5 speed. It's 'ok' but i really really wish I had 4.56s then I could run 35s at some point too and be okay.

search search!

you'll find that the deeper you gear, the better mileage you get and the longer your junk lasts.

some people will have anomoly mileage, keep in mind that other things will effect mpg, how heavy the tire is (tires can vary up to 60 pounds for a given size..), roof rack vs non, region (not all gas is made equal), driving style, weight, etc etc.

but what is consistant is that for the same rig geared 4.10, 4.56 and 4.88, the owner is happier with the deeper gears.

I don't get it. You seem to know that 4.10's and 4.56's gave you so what do you need from us?

You have experience with both, it's your decision on what you like.

Re-reading that, I was a bit more snide than I should have been.

This topic really has had the piss beaten out of it, but there is a general rule.

If there is any chance of going to a larger tire in the future, go deep. The difference between 4.56's and 4.10's will be noticeable on smaller tires, but a godsend if you upgrade to larger tires. You may cruise at a few hundred RPM faster, but you'll be deeper in the power band and more aptly prepared for heavy loads and towing.

Personally, I'd go with 4.56's if 33's are your starting point. I will ultimately be going with 4.10's, as I do not see tires larger than 31" in my Jeep's future (I have a 2001 auto).

30s-4.10
31s-32s- 4.56
33s-4.88
35s- 5.13-5.38

Go as deep as the axles you have can hold, I went 4.88 with 33s and have been getting close to 20 mpg with a corrected speedo. 4.10s are a waste of time, like people are saying go as deep as you possibly can you won't regret it.
