What did I do wrong here...

98 Cherokee 4.0

Replaced the head gasket yesterday, put it all back together and started it up and it wants to idle about 2800-3000 rpm. I checked all the vacuum hoses, even unplugged the IAC and TPS... still idles very high...

and yes it idled fine before I replaced the gasket. WTH!!!! :helpme:

BTW-- I am no rookie at this-- this is the 5th time I've done a head gasket on a 4.0.... never ran into this.

You most likely have a large vacuum leak at the intake manifold to head area. The manifold probably hung up on one of the locating studs.

Cruiser54 is right on the money with the primary suspect. Most of the time they don't crack. Don't feel bad; this problem comes up a lot!

You guys were right!!! went home and loosend it up and wiggled it around till I found a tight fit... runs like a champ now! Thanks guys!
