I am impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of the tire carrier, whose mounting hardware alone is a positive indicator for the precision integration of the unit with the stock Jeep cross-member, utilizing 18 bolts mounted through existing holes. The stock rear cross-member is sandwiched by the Detours 'subframe' and backing plate, both reinforcing and providing plenty of rigidity to hold the weight of the tire.

I sprayed the hitch bolts for a few days prior to removal, but still had to resort to cutting one off on each side. I used some cardboard to safeguard the fuel tank from sparks.

I prepped the stock rear cross-member for paint behind the bumper to ensure a clean mounting surface for the new tire carrier sub-frame assembly.

Although my bumper is bent quite a bit on the passenger side from a close encounter with a boulder, I felt it wouldn't negatively impact the installation of the tire carrier, so I applied a quick coat of flat black while I had the chance.

The nut strips couldn't be removed from the slots in the frame because of interference from the bolts I had to cut. The threads were too tall to fit through the access slot, so I had to get creative.

Here is where all of the initial mounting hardware comes into play.
I'm sure it significantly increases the strength of the rear end of my Jeep to support the weight of the spare.

In order to retain the stock bumper, access slots must be cut to allow the D-ring tabs to pass through. I measured twice and cut once.

The latch and spindle plates clamp everything in place and provide mounting locations for the tire carrier swingarm.

I love the way the front Detours mount looks. Hope to order one soon. I don't really like the back like that. Great write-up.

I have seen Detours retro fit it to someone elses home made bumper so that you wouldn't have to use the stock. It was real great looking.

The customer service at Detours is really good - it's like talking to a good buddy.
I asked for the tilted tire mount to match the hatch because it makes for a more pleasing silhouette.

I purchased this a few months back and installed it and honestly have to say I am super happy with it. although I will say if youre going to do a lot of offroading find a way to secure the tire on top right now I have a tie down strap through the tire then on the roof rails and I am going to make a plate on the hatch with a rubber bump on the tire but the wiggle is to be expected with any carrier and that has not affected my opinion about it. Oh and I even made a mount on it for my hi lift I will post pics if your interested.
But Great customer service and great quality I am very happy :D
