aw4 cables?

i just replaced the aw4 in my xj and it had been sitting for a while. the stupid cable on the right for the shifter that runs up to the steering column was stuck so i sprayed a litte wd40 on the linkage that controls the gear lockout. i used a screwdriver and moved it up and down a little bit to free it up well now the little tab thing that clicks up to keep the shifter in gear doesnt fully engage all the way... meaning that i can just shift throught the gears without pressing in the thumb button. and now also when i put the key in the and try to pull it back out it is really stiff and doesnt want to give me the key back. i can see the plastic column cover bulge when i turn the key back to lock when it puts up a fight. just wondering if anyone knows about that stupid cable and how i can go about getting it all to work correctly. thanks​
 
i cant believe that im the only one that has any experience with this problem. come on guys one of you knows what that cable is for and how it operates. help me out here.
 
It sounds like you already figured out what the cable does. It's probably the park lock cable made to lock out the shifter when the key is removed except yours is locked all the time. You can try removing the cable at the gear selector and see if the key turns smoothly and the cable operates.
 
i think i have it freed up on the shifter side. it looks like the problem is where it connects inside the steering column. i have no idea how to take that apart and expose whats under the plastic housing. any info or pics would help me greatly.

I'm making the final changes for converting my 88 XJ to an AX15. The AW4 park-lock cable has me a little confused and I wanted to see if anyone here could explain the function of the park-lock cable to me.

This help page will show you how to resolve the problem of not being able to get the key out of the ignition, due to mal-adjustment of the park-lock cable on the F-body with 4L60E auto transmission. This is a more obscure problem, but is easily remedied in just a few steps.
