I was driving to work today and heard a POP as I pulled into the parking space. Now my Jeep only turns to the left, steering wheel still spins with ease of power steering.
Any help is appreciated... this is on a 95 Grand. Ch.
So the steering wheel will turn right but the tires dont? Or does it feel like something is stopping the steering wheel from turning right?
First thing I would do is have someone get in the jeep with it running and turn the wheel from lock to lock while you check for clearances with axle components. (track bar bracket can get mighty close sometimes) Also keep an eye out for play in any of the tie rod ends when he turns the wheel. Any rolling of the tie rod or drag link when pressure is applied will give you a clue. Or just if the components don't move in complete unison.
If that test doesn't produce anything, I would pull the drag link off the pitman arm and turn the steering wheel. If it doesn't allow the pitman arm to move to the passenger side then the problem is in the steering box. And it needs replacing.
Just tried to roll it out the driveway. No turning of wheels period. Steering wheel spins from left to right but wheels dont budge, when I tried to turn left I heard another POP.
start at the steering wheel and turn it back and forth. Don't stop turning as someone follows the path from the steering column, to the steering box, to the pitman arm, to the drag link, to the tie rods, to the wheels. Somewhere in there you'll find input to an item that's not followed by an equal output. There-in lies the problem.
If after this test, you still cannot find a problem, make sure the track bar is still attached at both ends (it can allow the axle to shift left and right instead of the wheels turning)
